Mikdad: Unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria contradict UN Charter

Damascus, SANA_ Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad on Sunday received WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Ahmed Al-Manzari and WHO Representative to Syria, Dr Akjemal Magtymova.

Mikdad stressed the importance of reinforcing cooperation between Syria and WHO especially in light of the circumstances imposed by Coronavirus pandemic.

He talked about the comprehensive precautionary measures adopted by the government, which have contributed greatly to limiting the spread of this epidemic in Syria.

Mikdad reiterated his condemnation of the unilateral coercive measures that the United States of America and its European allies continue to impose on Syria, ignoring that they are immoral and inhuman and contradict the United Nations Charter.

He demanded the United Nations bodies and international organizations active in the humanitarian field, on top of which is the WHO, to reveal the reality of these measures and their impact on securing the basic health and humanitarian needs of the Syrian citizen.

Mikdad also stressed the need for the WHO to adhere to real humanitarian work and to avoid all forms of politicization.

He condemned the measures taken by the US administration against this organization at a time when the whole world faces the catastrophic consequences of the Corona epidemic.

In turn, Dr. Al-Manzari appreciated the good cooperation between the Syrian government and its institutions with the WHO.

He affirmed the organization’s desire to strengthen cooperation with the Syrian government in a way that achieves the interest of the Syrian people in facing health challenges.

Al-Manzari referred to the participation of Syria in the 67th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean and the election of the Minister of Health, Dr. Hassan Mohammad al-Ghabbash, as Vice-Chairman of the Regional Committee.

He praised the role that Syria has always played in the field of health sector at the regional level.
